I’m officially into the first week of year 2 in my business. You might be thinking “but wait, haven’t you been a naturopath for awhile now??” Yes, I have but I consider my most “real” business to be the one I started one year ago when I finally decided to do things MY WAY.
I spent SO many years trying to do what was expected, following the opinions of the masses about what it takes to “make it” in business. What I finally came to learn, and this can be applied to ANYTHING (not just business) is that:
You can only derive a deep sense of fulfillment when you follow the quiet whisperings of your soul.
It’s such a cliche but yet so true! When I first graduated from naturopathic medical school I remember frequently driving by this futon shop in Edmonton. They had a sign in the window for an upstairs rental office space. Every time I saw it, there was a part of me that felt drawn to it. Not that spot persay but to the idea of just having a little office space all to myself and quietly doing my work.
I did not follow through on this at that time because I felt as though it wouldn’t be a “smart” choice. Everyone said “you should have a mentor”, “you’ll get busy faster if you start in an established clinic”, ‘it takes FOREVER to build up a business”, “building a business is SO hard” blah, blah, blah.
These types of statements are many and varied and for several years I let them affect me and my choices. I joined 3 different clinics over the years, spent a period of time doing home visits, and eventually ended up buying an existing business from a previous naturopath. And you know what…EVERY SINGLE TIME something (or some things) would arise out of the blue to turn it into a situation that just couldn’t work anymore.
On my final clinic attempt when things went south, it completely clicked. After all those years I said “OKAY I get it! It took me awhile to get this message but I finally get it!” …which of course was that quiet urging to go get a little office by myself that I had been ignoring for so long.
On February 1st, 2018 I finally took the plunge into my own little office space. It was the best decision I ever made. I can’t even tell you how much I LOVE it. Seems crazy now to think that I was so worried about whether or not I could hack it.
Funny thing though…looking back over how things played out, had I listened when I first felt the desire…truthfully, I wouldn’t have been prepared.
It’s been the long, hard, arduous road that it took to get here that taught me everything I needed to know to reach this place where I could, not only hack it but, truly be ready to fall in love with it.
Isn’t it funny how life is like that?! We waste so much time trying to figure out our “plan” and worrying about how things will turn out when the truth is that no matter how “wrong” it may look at the time or how badly it goes…it’s still always right for you.
It’s so fitting that the start of my 2nd year coincides with this month of love. I’m filled with love and gratitude for my life, not because everything is perfect all the time but because I feel blessed to be who I am and get to do the work that I do.
I’m so grateful to all of you that have joined me on this journey. I can’t think of a better way to show my appreciation for your support than to collect things that I LOVE and share them with you. So I am going to spend this month gathering THINGS that I love to make up THREE mystery gift bags that I will be giving away at the end of the month.
On February 28th, 2019 I will draw 3 names and those lucky names will receive my mystery gift bags.
You can catch some of the item reveals on my social media throughout the month. Be assured right now that there will definitely be chocolate because for anyone that knows me well, that’s a given. Otherwise though the bags will contain a variety of items from a relaxing massage gift certificate to an energizing supplement to a soothing skin care product and more.
To enter the draw, you can either go to my Facebook page and send me a message or email me email@example.com
